Class Review: The Dailey Method DC Barre Studio

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Washington D.C.’s first  Dailey Method barre studio, where I made a valiant effort to channel Misty Copeland and get a killer workout in the process. The studio was kind enough to offer FREE classes, along with giveaways, snacks, and mimosas, to celebrate the opening of its new location right in the heart of the U Street neighborhood.

Situated on the third floor of an unsuspecting building on 12th & U, The Dailey Method’s space was refreshingly bright, thanks to several huge windows that offered up loads of natural light throughout the studio. Just past the front desk, I noticed a spin room on my left with an attached barre area. This room apparently is reserved for  the “Dailey Cycle” class, which is a 40 min spin class followed by a 20 minute ab/barre workout. Just past the spin room, I found a second classroom, dedicate solely to “Dailey Barre” classes  where students get a full body workout through barre and floor exercises. I also found restrooms and two gorgeous, full-sized showers (I’m talking bigger than my apartment bathroom) which is a very rare find in D.C. these days.

My class of nine was led by Crysten, a professional dancer and NFL cheerleader, who led us through a simple, but intense workout. We started with some leg lifts and torso twists (pictured on the left), a foreshadowing some of the moves yet to come. From the beginning of class, we were reminded to engage our cores, and elongate our spines to fire up every little abdominal fiber in our bodies.

After our warm up, Crysten guided us through a variety of yoga poses, stretches and balancing moves with and without the assistance of the barre. At one point, I somehow managed to slide into a full split–a feat that I have not accomplished since the ninth grade!

As we transitioned from floor to barre, to tree pose, to C curves, Crysten guided our breathing and helped us maintain proper alignment and abdominal engagement. She helped us make minor adjustments to perfect each move, and always offered modifications to allow us to keep moving, but at reduced intensity level if needed. We even did a little work with these tiny 2lb weights. I chuckled at these barely-there dumbbells, until the tricep extensions and squeezes carried on and my arms began to shake under these deceptive weights. Pretty much every limb was shaking at one point or another during the class, letting me and anyone  else watching know that I was, in fact, getting a serious workout. Even one day later, my glutes continued to remind me of all the work Crysten’s Dailey Barre class tricked me into doing!

All in all, The Dailey Method is a welcome addition to the U St/Shaw neighborhood that will definitely lift and kick any butt into shape! Check out the class schedule here to sign up for spin or barre, and enjoy the burn!

I’ve heard so many good things about these Barre classes! We don’t have any studios nearby, but once one opens up, you know I’m going to try it out!

I was signed up to attend both cycle and barre this weekend but my weekend was jammed with so many other things, couldn’t make it all work. I’m glad you mentioned it was in an unsuspecting building because I actually could not find it on Saturday!!! hence missing cycle. Boo! Glad to hear the review though. U Street is tough for me to get to.

I definitely passed the studio at first. If the door was closed I wouldn’t have seen it at all! I was hoping to see you there. I’m sure we’ll bump into each other at another fitness event soon!

Oh yea I think you and Mar were the reason I heard about the event! They have a special for unlimited classes for a month for $100 which is a crazy deal for barre!

Sounds like a great experience! I still have yet to give a barre class a try. I’m sure I’m missing out on something great, I just haven’t had the time to try it out.

It’s such a different workout, I always feel muscles hurting that I didn’t know existed! There might be a class at your gym!

  9. December 7, 2015

Looks like an awesome story. I love all of the natural light in the studio!

    Very cool!

There is a barre studio right next to work, but I confess, I am a little afraid. Maybe one day I will work up the courage to get my booty in there.

I need to try a barre class! Now.

  12. December 8, 2015

Sounds like a great class! I’ve done that where I think the weights are way too light but then after a zillion reps I’m shaking. Haha!

  13. December 8, 2015

I’ve been thinking of doing barre…but have not bc of a reason you mentioned – the tiny dumbbells I’ve been skeptical of lol. Perhaps I need to give it a shot!

hahaha! They have 4 and 6lb weights too! Trust me you’ll beg for the 2s. It was a little embarrassing though. 🙂
