You may not know this, but over the last year I served as the Washington D.C. city captain for an amazing organization called GirlTrek. The experience was empowering, thrilling, and unforgettable to put it into just a few words.
What GirlTrek is All About
GirlTrek is a national non-profit on a mission to inspire black women and girls to be active and take control of their health just by walking 30 minutes a day. GirlTrek was founded by two women, Vanessa and Morgan, who realized that their sisters, mothers and communities were facing an epidemic of inactive lifestyles, leading to obesity and chronic disease.
Their solution was simple: create a movement of women who want to take control of their health by walking the streets of their neighborhoods. From there, the movement and the organization took off. In only three years, GirlTrek has 42,000 women (and counting) walking with them and inspiring more women to do the same.
As city captain, I helped bring women together to explore the Washington, D.C. area and share their GirlTrek experience with everyone they met. Over the past year, I was honored to join GirlTrek on an exhilarating trek in the Rocky Mountains with over 50 other GirlTrek leaders and learn more about my ancestors and the power that we women hold. I also trekked through parts of the Appalachian Mountains and historic Harpers Ferry with my D.C. GirlTrek crew! (heeeyy!)
Although my time as city captain has come to a close, I couldn’t leave without thanking Vanessa, Morgan, and Wordna for letting me be apart of this organization and bringing my mother and friends along for the ride! And a huge thank you to the DMV women who came out to the monthly treks and took it upon themselves to lead their own teams across the area. I will always be team GirlTrek, spreading the word no matter what!
